If you are looking for a unique gift that represents Tucson, I suggest visiting a few of our local attraction’s gift shops. One of my favorites, I always visit with our out of town guests, is DeGrazia’s Gallery in the Sun. This is a gallery and gift shop that has expanded over the years and just keeps on getting better. Who was Ted DeGrazia? He was an American impressionist, painter, sculptor, composer, actor, director, designer, architect, jeweler and lithographer. He was Arizona born and bred. I remember in the 70’s and 80’s visiting his gallery. Many a time Ted would be in the lobby chatting with a visitor and willing to sign your just purchased print. I have one of those hanging in my home. Over the last few years, I have come to appreciate the genius and creativity of this man. Today we’re here to learn about the gift shop.
There’s no charge to visit the Gallery in the Sun, however they do appreciate donations. One way to support this oasis in our desert is making purchases in the gift shop. There’s something for everyone.
I love this counter. The tiles are all reproductions of DeGrazia’s work.
It’s always fun to stock up on cards for those occasions you would like something extra special. Each are blank inside so you can include your own words for the recipient to enjoy.
Looking for a unique ornament? What a fun gift for friends visiting for the holidays. They will always remember their time in Tucson.
What’s a gift shop without tee shirts? Pretty sun catchers too.
Mugs, candles, fun sets of dominoes and golf balls.
DeGrazia prints ready for framing.
Books too. James W and Marilyn D Johnson recently published a book about DeGrazia. There are signed copies for purchase. If you can’t make it into the gallery, here’s the link to order it through Amazon: amzn.to/1HBPjdD. It is the first ever comprehensive biography of DeGrazia, just like the sign says.
Here’s some breaking news, in case you haven’t heard, Tucson gets hot in the summer. Like really hot, the day we were here it was at least 105 degrees. In the summer, especially when you are entertaining kids, you want to find cool places to go. Not only cool temperature wise, but things they would enjoy. I feel it’s important to expose children to museums and our culture. This was the perfect outing. The special little girl in our lives has been here many times over the years. It was her Mamas and her little cousins first visit. They all loved it and plan to come back when it’s cooler to explore the grounds around the buildings. Of course, we didn’t leave without buying a few things in the gift shop.
You can find DeGrazia in the Sun at 6300 North Swan Road. When we first visited this place in the 1970’s it was hard to find. A tiny sign on Swan Road way out in the desert North of Tucson. Today it’s surrounded by development and the turn off is well marked.
Tucson has many wonderful museum and gallery gift shops. It’s a win, win when you spend your money in these places. Plus you have something unique to remember your time in Tucson or to share with a friend. I would be interested in reading your comments about other gift shops you have enjoyed. Keep shopping and in Tucson we like to keep it local.
