The Arizona International Film Festival has been screening films in Tucson this month. One of the films was shown at Tucson’s Screening Room this week, along with four other shorts. The Pie Lady of Pie Town, the film, came to Tucson. Unlike the other shorts shown that evening, Tucson got a bonus. The creator of the film and the creator of the pies came to celebrate.
That’s Kathy Knapp, the Pie Town Lady, on the left and Jane Rosemont, the creator of the film on the right. You can see the back of Stan’s head. Stan is Kathy’s partner in pies. We learned from the film Kathy fell in love with one of Stan’s pies and later Stan. That’s a story for you to discover when you see the film. Like the pies that are made with love, so was the film. The love came through loud and clear, the love of New Mexico, the love to continue on a tradition started by Kathy’s mother, the love of community and place and of course the love of pie. Jane captures all of it. It gives me chills just thinking about the film.
After the screening, we were in for a treat. Here’s Kathy, Jane and Stan heading down Congress Street to Hotel Congress. Kathy had brought pies from Pie Town. She finished preparing the pies earlier in the day and they were baked by Hotel Congress. There was Pie Party starting at eight. Were we in for a treat. Look at how happy everyone is, but who wouldn’t be when you know you’re on your way to eat pie!
We were all treated to a generous piece of blueberry pie. Now how did Kathy know this is one of my favorites? On my have to try list, next trip to Pie Town, is the apple with green chiles. May need to call ahead to see if one will be baked that day. This was muy bueno!
Club Congress was celebrating with a few pie inspired drinks. Our friend ordered a Key Lime Pie and we all took a sip. It was delicious. Back to the pies.
Here’s Kathy climbing onto a chair to take a picture of her pies and the people lined up to get a piece. It catches Kathy’s playfulness and her great smile. I told her it was a good thing she decided to shave her armpits that morning. Who knew they would be going out to the world. Now down to some serious business.
If the Pie Town Lady is visiting your city, put her to work with a pie judging contest. Four downtown restaurants decided to participate with a cherry, strawberry rhubarb, chocolate and a lemon chiffon pies to determine who had the best pie in downtown Tucson. Here’s Kathy cutting into the cherry. Jane appears to be wondering how is Kathy going to decide who has the best.
Here’s Kathy discussing the attributes of the Strawberry Rhubarb pie. There was only one pie left to try after this one. See that beautiful meringue topping the lemon chiffon pie? It was the last one cut. Kathy was torn between the strawberry and the lemon. The lemon won out. To make it even better, it had been prepared by Hotel Congress, the host of the event. They were awarded the Best Downtown Pie. We got to sample a piece of the winner. Oh my, it was beyond delicious and it’s on the menu. You too can visit Hotel Congress and enjoy a piece at the Cup Cafe. It’s worth the trip into downtown Tucson.
The next day Kathy, Stan and Jane were headed home to New Mexico. The Pie-O-Neer was missing the Pie Lady. The next time you’re visiting New Mexico, think about a side trip to Pie Town. You could combine it with a visit to the Very Large Array.
You know the place I’m talking about, Jodi Foster made it famous in the movie Contact. Keep on heading East on Highway 60 and you will be in Pie Town. Enjoy the pies that are made fresh daily with love. If you get a chance to see the film, The Pie Lady of Pie Town, please don’t miss it. It will warm your heart and make you hungry for pie.
